Protection Officer to Monitor Two Cases
Compromise Reached on Dowry Items and Maste Amount
Jashpur>>The Chairperson of the Chhattisgarh State Women’s Commission, Dr. Kiranmayi Nayak, along with the Sarguja division in-charge members, Mrs. Priyamvada Singh Judev and Mrs. Sarla Kosaria, heard cases related to women’s harassment today at the Collectorate meeting room in Jashpur district. A total of 303 hearings took place statewide, with 5 cases heard in Jashpur district.
Applicants presented two complaints before the commission. One involved the non-division of joint family property by the applicant’s father and other respondents. The applicant’s mother had repaired their house and opened a shop for livelihood, but four years ago, the respondents forcibly evicted her mother. Currently, the applicant resides with her mother at her uncle’s home. The respondents were questioned, and they agreed that the applicant and her mother should be allowed to stay in the house without interference. A Protection Officer was appointed to mediate and ensure the applicant’s right to reside in the house.
Additionally, the applicant filed a request to withdraw the case after resolving the internal disputes. The case was dismissed by the commission after both parties agreed to a settlement.
In another case, the applicant reported that after her marriage, the respondents posted her photo on social media to defame her. The respondents claimed they married the applicant through an affidavit, but after her complaint at the Bagicha police station, police action was taken. The issue was resolved with no further action necessary, and the case was dismissed.
Further complaints were related to dowry demands, where the applicant alleged that the respondents had asked for Rs. 10 lakh in dowry. She filed a report on 21 April 2024 but claimed no action had been taken by the police. During the hearing, the applicant expressed her desire to resolve the matter amicably. The respondents agreed to return items worth Rs. 4 lakh, while the applicant demanded Rs. 5 lakh. The case was adjourned for a hearing on 15 February 2025.
In another case, the applicant’s son had been missing for five years after traveling to Goa. The Commission will send a letter to the Jashpur SP requesting assistance in locating the missing person.
The next hearing will take place in Raipur as per the applicant’s request. Additionally, the applicant will be provided with free legal assistance.
