Mule bank account holders/promoters/brokers/defrauders raided simultaneously; 62 accused arrested, including 3 foreign nationals from Nigeria.

  • Following the instructions of the Range Inspector General of Police, Raipur, simultaneous raids were conducted at 40 different locations against mule bank account holders/promoters/brokers/providers of accounts for fraud in the largest police operation to date.
  • Over 100 police officers/staff participated in the raids, resulting in the arrest of 62 individuals, including 3 Nigerian nationals, from Rajasthan, Odisha, Raipur, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, and Mahasamund.
  • 1,435 reports are filed against the arrested individuals in various police stations across the country, with fraud totaling ₹84.88 crores committed against victims.
  • Fraudulent amounts of ₹2 crores have been frozen in the accounts of the accused.

The Range Inspector General of Police, Raipur, Mr. Amresh Mishra, devised a plan to investigate mule bank accounts reported on the Cybercrime Portal, directing the Range Cyber Police Station to conduct the investigation.

Under his guidance, over 1,100 mule bank accounts were scrutinized. Victims were identified and details of incidents were gathered. Using the portal’s reports, bank transaction data, multiple accounts held by a single individual, and other technical evidence, individuals involved in opening these accounts and using them for cybercrime were identified. These crimes included fake share trading apps, crypto investments, Google review tasks, Telegram tasks, bank KYC updates, and Google search scams.

The Range Cyber Police Station, Anti-Crime and Cyber Unit, and several police stations in Raipur formed over 20 teams with more than 100 officers/staff. The accused were traced and arrested, along with agents linked to these mule accounts. A total of 62 accused were apprehended.

Fraudulent amounts of approximately ₹2 crores have been frozen in the accounts of the accused, belonging to victims from various states. Efforts are underway to contact victims and return their money. For frauds occurring over the past six months, court orders were obtained to return ₹4 crores from the first-layer bank accounts to victims, of which over ₹2 crores have been reimbursed so far.

1,435 reports are filed in police stations across the country against the arrested accused. Investigations revealed that ₹84.88 crores were fraudulently obtained by these individuals in various cases.

The arrested include 3 foreign nationals from Nigeria and residents from Rajasthan, Odisha, Raipur, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, and Mahasamund. Interrogations of the accused have revealed the involvement of several others who used these accounts for fraud. In the next phase, they will also be arrested. The accused provided their accounts on a rental basis or received 10-20% commission from the fraudulent amounts. The cyber team is also continuously obtaining information from banks about mule accounts with large or unusual transactions, with more arrests expected soon.

Case 01: Through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) portal under the Ministry of Home Affairs, it was reported that ₹36,48,488 from cybercrimes across various states was deposited into a mule bank account in Utkarsh Small Finance Bank, Raipur branch. Case No. 44/25 under Sections 317(2), 317(4), 317(5), 111, 3(5) BNS was registered at Civil Line Police Station, Raipur. 47 accused were arrested during the investigation.

Case 02: Complainant Umakant Verma reported a ₹50 lakh fraud under the guise of Google review tasks. Case No. 27/25 under Sections 318(4), 111, 3(5) BNS was registered at Gudhiyari Police Station, resulting in the arrest of 3 accused.

Case 03: Complainant Atul Agrawal reported a ₹19 lakh fraud under the pretext of earning profits through share trading. Case No. 49/25 under Sections 420, 34 IPC was registered at Vidhan Sabha Police Station. 5 accused were arrested during the investigation.

Case 04: Complainant Pooja Sahu reported a ₹48,000 fraud under the guise of D.Ed admission form fees. Case No. 20/25 under Sections 318(4), 111, 3(5) BNS was registered at Azad Chowk Police Station. 2 accused were arrested during the investigation.

Case 05: Complainant M.V.S.S. Lakshmi reported that unidentified mobile users impersonated Mumbai Crime Branch Police and falsely accused her of opening 311 bank accounts using her Aadhaar card, demanding ₹58 lakhs under the guise of digital arrest. Case No. 305/24 under Sections 318(4), 3(5) BNS was registered at Pandri Police Station (Mowa), with the investigation transferred to Range Cyber Police Station, Raipur. 1 accused was arrested.

Case 06: Complainant Jitendra Sahu reported an ₹8.5 lakh fraud under the guise of earning profits through share trading. Case No. 63/25 under Section 420 IPC was registered at Tikrapara Police Station. 3 accused were arrested during the investigation.

Case 07: Complainant Dr. Avinash Dhole reported a ₹2.5 lakh fraud under the pretext of investing in cryptocurrency for profits. Case No. 25/25 under Sections 420, 34 IPC was registered at Khamardih Police Station. 1 accused was arrested.
