Continuous Expansion of Healthcare Facilities in Chhattisgarh: CM Vishnu Dev Sai’s Efforts Lead to Success
People from Other States Turn to Ambedkar Hospital for Open Heart Surgery
Dr. Krishnakant Sahu and Team Successfully Perform Heart Surgery on Madhya Pradesh Patient
Patient’s Heart Was Only Functioning at 35%, Suffering Breathing Issues for Four Years
Raipur >>Under the guidance of Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, health services in Chhattisgarh are continuously expanding. Following the instructions of Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, basic facilities in government hospitals are improving day by day. As a result, the trust in Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Hospital, affiliated with Pt. Nehru Medical College, is growing, with patients from not only the state but also neighboring states seeking treatment here.
Recently, the Heart Surgery Department at Ambedkar Hospital successfully performed another open-heart surgery on a patient from Madhya Pradesh. This case was particularly significant as the patient’s heart was functioning at only 35% capacity. The patient had been suffering from Rheumatic Heart Disease, which caused narrowing in two of his heart valves – the Aortic and Mitral valves – and leakage in the Tricuspid valve. Led by Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, the surgical team replaced the two affected valves with titanium metal valves and repaired the third one. After the surgery, the patient’s health has steadily improved, and he is expected to be discharged in a couple of days. The entire operation was carried out free of charge under the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Ayushman Scheme.
Dr. Santosh Sonkar, the Medical Superintendent of Ambedkar Hospital, emphasized that with the available resources, the hospital ensures patients receive the best treatment possible. The hospital is also providing treatment under the Ayushman Scheme to patients from neighboring states like Madhya Pradesh.
The 52-year-old patient from Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh, had been experiencing breathing difficulties for four years. Initially, he was diagnosed with asthma, but later, it was discovered that three of his heart valves were damaged. Replacing three valves is a highly challenging procedure, and after consulting with various heart centers, the patient decided to undergo surgery at Ambedkar Hospital, where he was given a detailed analysis of the situation. Despite the risk of kidney failure, the patient chose to proceed with the surgery.
The patient was diagnosed with Rheumatic Heart Disease, a condition that occurs due to untreated childhood infections. The infection caused by Streptococcus bacteria can lead to valve damage as the body’s immune system mistakenly targets the heart valves. This disease is most prevalent in North and Central India.
The surgery involved replacing the Mitral and Aortic valves with metallic valves and repairing the Tricuspid valve. The patient started eating and drinking on his own the very next day after surgery.
The surgical team included Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Sankalp, Critical Care Specialist Dr. Shruti Turkar, Perfusionists Rahul and Digeswar, OT Technicians Bhupendra, Harish, Niraakar, and Nursing Staff Rajendra, Narendra, Chova, and Dushyant.
