5th International Conference on Green Metro System 2025: Highlighting India’s Sustainable Urban Transport Efforts

Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, while praising the achievements of Delhi Metro, referred to it as a benchmark of the Green Metro System in India. He was addressing the inaugural session of the 5th International Conference on Green Metro System held at Metro Bhawan in New Delhi.
The conference saw the participation of various dignitaries, experts, policymakers, industry representatives, and researchers, including Union Minister of Energy and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal. Experts from both India and abroad deliberated on innovations and solutions for sustainable urban transport. The minister congratulated Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), India Metro Rail Organization Society (IM), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for organizing this important conference. He described it as a crucial platform for promoting sustainable development in urban transport and adopting green technologies.
The minister said, Recently, the Blue Line of Delhi Metro, from Yamuna Bank to Vaishali, received carbon-neutral certification. This highlights Delhi Metro’s commitment to tackling climate change and reducing its carbon footprint. He emphasized that after Phase-IV, Delhi Metro is set to expand its 395-kilometer network to 505 kilometers, maintaining its leadership in the sustainable urban transport sector.
The minister further stated that the Indian government is prioritizing urban transport, making India the third-largest metro network country in the world, after China, with a network spanning 1,000+ kilometers across 23 cities in 11 states, continuously expanding. A historic allocation for urban development projects was made in this year’s Union Budget.
Highlighting India’s progress, the minister remarked, India is playing a leading role in addressing the global climate change challenge and has achieved its goal of reducing carbon emission intensity by 33-35% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.” He also mentioned that since 2014, the world has witnessed India’s unwavering commitment to green energy. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is making significant strides towards sustainable development. India’s renewable energy capacity has increased from 70 gigawatts to 170 gigawatts, and the 40% renewable energy target of the Paris Agreement has already been achieved ahead of the 2030 goal. India now ranks fourth in wind energy capacity and has increased its solar energy capacity by 20 times.
The minister concluded by saying, In this period of growth for India, the government is fully committed to enhancing green urban mobility and sustainability.
