NIT Raipur Hosts 15th Convocation, Shreyansh Gaur Named Overall Topper

Raipur >>The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur celebrated its 15th convocation ceremony on Friday, February 28, 2025, at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium. The event was graced by Kirloskar Brothers’ Chairman and MD, Mr. Sanjay Kirloskar, as the Chief Guest, while former ISRO Chairman, Dr. S. Somanath, attended as the Guest of Honor.

Over 1,300 Degrees Conferred, Shreyansh Gaur Tops Overall

Maintaining its tradition of academic excellence, NIT Raipur awarded degrees to 1,319 students, including 1,055 undergraduates (B.Tech and B.Arch), 229 postgraduates (MCA, MSc, and M.Tech), and 35 Ph.D. scholars. To recognize outstanding academic performance, 13 gold and 12 silver medals were awarded to B.Tech and B.Arch toppers, while 14 gold and 14 silver medals were presented to MCA, MSc, and M.Tech students. Shreyansh Gaur (B.Tech, Computer Science & Engineering) was honored as the overall topper of the institute.

The convocation was presided over by Dr. Suresh Haware, Chairman of the Board of Governors, and attended by Director Dr. N.V. Ramana Rao, Senate members, BOG members, faculty, staff, and graduating students.

Director Highlights NIT Raipur’s Achievements

In his address, Dr. Rao emphasized NIT Raipur’s commitment to academic excellence, research, and societal impact. He highlighted initiatives such as the Quality Improvement Program (QIP), infrastructure development, and collaborations with IIT Kanpur, Washington State University, and SECL. He also mentioned that the institute had secured multiple patents, hosted national and international conferences, and incubated several startups through its Technology Business Incubator (TBI). Additionally, he praised cultural, technical, and sports events like Eclectica, Code Utsav, and Summer, which contribute to holistic student development.

Guest of Honor Dr. Somanath Encourages Lifelong Learning

Addressing the gathering, Dr. S. Somanath lauded NIT Raipur’s legacy and contributions to fields such as mining, metallurgy, and physics. Congratulating the graduates, he emphasized that earning a degree is just the beginning and that true success lies in continuous learning, adaptability, and resilience.

Drawing from his experience at ISRO, Dr. Somanath spoke about overcoming failures through persistence and innovation. He stressed the importance of cutting-edge technologies like AI, quantum computing, and space technology in shaping the future. Encouraging students to tackle key national challenges, he urged them to enhance healthcare access, bridge the digital divide, strengthen cybersecurity, ensure energy sustainability, and address environmental concerns like climate change and pollution.

Dr. Somanath also discussed emerging job markets, where automation and AI are reshaping industries, and advised students to stay adaptable, continuously upgrade their skills, and explore entrepreneurial ventures. He highlighted the power of collaboration, teamwork, and interdisciplinary approaches in solving complex problems and encouraged graduates to make meaningful societal contributions while upholding NIT Raipur’s values.

Chief Guest Mr. Kirloskar Stresses Ethical and Social Responsibility

Mr. Sanjay Kirloskar acknowledged the efforts of students, parents, and faculty in shaping successful careers. He emphasized the role of persistence, discipline, and flexibility in professional growth and urged students to apply their education for the betterment of society.

Highlighting the significance of scientific and technological advancements, he underscored the need to balance career success with strong ethical and social commitments. He also spoke about the power of small actions in shaping a better world and emphasized qualities such as mindfulness, compassion, and empathy for both personal and professional growth.

Convocation Ends on a Patriotic Note

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of gold medals to department toppers and Ph.D. scholars, followed by the distribution of UG and PG degrees, marking the fulfillment of the students’ academic aspirations. The event ended with the national anthem, making it a memorable milestone for NIT Raipur’s students, faculty, and esteemed guests.
