Chhattisgarh Receives Approval for 846,931 Prime Minister’s Housing Units: Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai
On September 4, 2014, Chhattisgarh’s Chief Minister, Mr. Vishnudev Sai, made a significant announcement stating that the Government of India has approved 846,931 Prime Minister’s Housing Units (PMAY) for Chhattisgarh. This announcement came as a major relief for the state’s poor and underprivileged families who have been dreaming of owning a home. The significance of this announcement is further enhanced as the previous government had failed to effectively implement this scheme, leaving millions of families deprived of its benefits.
Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme: An Introduction
The Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme (PMAY) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India aimed at helping all poor and low-income families in the country fulfill their dream of owning a home. Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive financial assistance to build their homes. The scheme facilitates home construction through joint contributions from both the central and state governments.
The primary goal of the scheme is to provide every family with a permanent, safe, and dignified home. In a state like Chhattisgarh, where a large number of poor and underprivileged people reside, the importance of this scheme is even greater. According to the information provided by Chief Minister Mr. Vishnudev Sai, Chhattisgarh has received approval for 846,931 Prime Minister’s Housing Units under this scheme.
The Previous Government’s Failure in Chhattisgarh
In his announcement, Chief Minister Sai also revealed that in the past five years, around 1.8 million poor families in Chhattisgarh were deprived of the benefits of the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme. The main reason for this was the failure of the previous state government to arrange the required 40% state share for this scheme. This was a serious lapse, resulting in millions of poor families being left with unfulfilled dreams of owning a home.
Mr. Sai stated, “Our government took the oath on December 13, 2023, and on the very next day, December 14, in our first cabinet meeting, we approved 1.8 million Prime Minister’s Housing Units.” This prompt action underscores the state government’s priorities and its sensitivity towards the poor.
A Major Achievement in the New Financial Year
The Chief Minister further informed that in the budget for the new financial year, Chhattisgarh received approval from the Government of India for 846,931 Prime Minister’s Housing Units. Out of these, 699,331 units were approved under the SECC 2011 (Socio-Economic and Caste Census), and 147,600 units fall under the ‘Plus’ category. The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this significant achievement and said, “On behalf of the 30 million people of Chhattisgarh, especially those benefiting from the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Prime Minister.”
Contribution of the Prime Minister’s Janman Scheme
Chief Minister Sai also mentioned the Prime Minister’s Janman Scheme, which includes the approval of 24,064 housing units by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Special Backward Tribes, also known as the President’s adopted sons. Many of these units have already been completed, bringing the dream of a safe and dignified home to these underprivileged communities as well.
Implementation of the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme
Since January 2024, 199,000 Prime Minister’s Housing Units have already been constructed, reflecting the success of the scheme and the government’s commitment. The Chief Minister emphasized that as per Modi’s guarantee, 1.8 million housing units will be completed in a timely manner. This makes it clear that the state government is prioritizing the implementation of this scheme to ensure that poor and underprivileged families can fulfill their dream of owning a home as soon as possible.
Niyad Nelanar Scheme: “Your Good Village”
For the Naxal-affected areas and surrendered Naxalites of Chhattisgarh, the state government has requested approval for more than 10,000 additional housing units under the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme from the Union Minister of Rural Development, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan. The objective of this scheme is to foster development and establish peace in the Naxal-affected areas. The proposal is expected to receive approval soon, allowing people living in these Naxal-affected areas to also obtain safe and permanent housing.
Addressing the Housing Crisis in Chhattisgarh
The housing crisis in Chhattisgarh has long been a major challenge, particularly for the poor and underprivileged sections of society. A large number of people in both rural and urban areas of the state live without any permanent housing. The construction of these housing units approved under the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme is a significant step towards addressing this issue.
For a large portion of Chhattisgarh’s population, this scheme will improve their quality of life. Having a permanent home will not only enhance their social status but also have a positive impact on critical areas like health, safety, and education.
State Government’s Commitment
Chief Minister Mr. Vishnudev Sai also made it clear that his government is fully committed to implementing this scheme on time and effectively. The state share has been arranged, and the state government is determined to complete the construction of all the housing units approved under the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme in a timely manner.
He emphasized that this scheme is extremely important for the development of Chhattisgarh, and his government will leave no stone unturned in its implementation. He also assured the public that the state government is fully committed to making their dream homes a reality.
Chief Minister’s Appeal
Chief Minister Mr. Vishnudev Sai appealed to the people of Chhattisgarh to take advantage of this scheme and realize their dream of owning a home. He said, “This scheme is for your well-being and satisfaction. We want every poor family in Chhattisgarh to have a permanent, safe, and dignified home.” He also mentioned that the state government is ready to provide all possible assistance to ensure that no eligible family is deprived of this scheme.
Future Plans
The Chhattisgarh government is also working to accelerate the state’s development through other schemes and projects in addition to the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme. The Chief Minister hinted that the state government may soon announce other schemes that will be particularly beneficial for rural areas and the underprivileged sections of society.
Additionally, the state government is working on implementing several new schemes for urban development to ensure comprehensive development across all regions of the state. Chief Minister Mr. Sai assured that his government is committed to the development of the state and will make every possible effort to transform Chhattisgarh into a developed and progressive state.
The approval of 846,931 Prime Minister’s Housing Units for Chhattisgarh is a significant achievement for the state’s poor and underprivileged families. Chief Minister Mr. Vishnudev Sai has described it as a major step towards the state’s development. By rectifying the failures of the past five years, the current state government is determined to implement this scheme effectively.
The successful implementation of this scheme will not only provide an opportunity for the state’s poor families to realize their dream of owning a home but will also play a crucial role in the overall development of Chhattisgarh. With the state government’s commitment and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guarantee, the resolution of the housing crisis in Chhattisgarh is certainly within reach.
